The trend for businesses, large and small, to move away from traditional dedicated PBX telephone systems is common in markets throughout the world. Voice over IP (VoIP) adoption is just one factor that continues fueling this change. Another catalyst for change are the empowering features and capabilities included in Unified Communications (UC) products, such as presence, messaging, and database integration, all of which are made much more efficient in an all-IP environment. Through several generations of solutions, Microsoft has addressed the UC market with software platforms, and its most recent product, Microsoft Lync, is reaching its stride just as many legacy PBX systems that were replaced in response to Y2K concerns are beginning to be phased out.
